Seguro que Neal Cassady es la persona que más libros inspiró y protagonizó en la literatura universal del siglo XX. Su papel como demiurgo de los escritores de la Generación Beat le ganó un puesto en las letras y la mitología popular norteamericanas. Y aunque también escribió unas cuantas cosas de mérito por su cuenta, nunca las publicó estando vivo. No tenía tiempo: tenía que correr de un lado a otro, saltar de cama en cama y de bar en bar para que otros intentaran seguir su ritmo y retratarlo o aludirlo en un montón de libros famosos. Pero a los beats la inspiración que Neal Cassady les dio no les vino sólo del individuo excepcional sino que les vino también de su capacidad de contar y divagar sin aburrir, y del estilo libre y torrencial de las extensas cartas que les escribía. El primer tercio es el mayor esfuerzo literario de Neal Cassady, constituye su autobiografía, un relato pormenorizado de sus tremendos y terribles primeros años que transcurrieron entre miserias, por los barrios bajos de Denver. En esta edición se recogen también otros textos de Neal Cassady, así como varias cartas a Jack Kerouac y Ken Kesey.
