Little Women Book Summary

While their father is away at war, the four March sisters try their best to maintain life in their New England home. Fifteen-year-old Jo, modeled after author Louisa May Alcott, is a bit of a tomboy, tends to get in trouble, and loves writing. The oldest, Meg, works as a governess and puts herself in charge in the absence of their parents. The kind and charitable Beth loves music and being a caretaker. The youngest, Amy, is slightly spoiled and frustrated by being treated as the youngest.
Alcott gives us a realistic account of the girl’s lives – the ups and downs, tragedies and triumphs, successes and failures. It’s long remained one of the most relatable and appealing works of American literature.

I have read many books in my life, and this is one of the better ones. Although it interested me, others might very well find it boring. But, overall, I really enjoyed it!!πŸ‘πŸ»

This was my favorite childhood book, and now, though I'm old enough to be a grandmother, I still love it. It takes me back to when I first read the book, given to me by a teacher I adored and whom I always thank for encouraging my love for literature. Alcott had that marvelous ability to draw readers comfortably into the settings in which she placed her characters and allow us to know those characters on an intimate basis. I wish she had written a library full of books as I'd be happy to read them all.

This book was wonderful. Amazing! I couldn't put it down! When I first picked it up, it seemed somewhat slow, and dull (four sisters chatting by the fireplace?) but as I read on, I was enraptured by the lovely characteristics of Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. The dialogue between the girls was wonderful, and told in a very different style. You could obviously see how the girls differed and how they were alike. Laurie was one of my favorite characters from the moment he was introduced though. His enigmatically and slightly mischievous personality always made me smile, and he was definitely a hero in the sense that he was always there for the girls. The plot isn't exact; it's more of a life span between the ages of the girls at the beginning of the book (meg 17, Jo 15, Beth 13, and Amy 12). It was a tad confusing at first, but it helped me put myself into their shoes, and "grow up with them" as they deal with their hardships. The book was very cheery and pleasant (very refreshing after reading Mockingjay) and also had good solid morales, no bad words or profanity, it was almost surprising to me to read a book that could be this pleasant. It's very refreshing. There are some sad parts to it, the most sad being the ending. After all the "years" and the childhood you've shared with the girls, it's sad to see them all grow up, marry, and move out, and it's very bittersweet and you almost wish it would go back in time to when they were all children, before they even talked about love, and would go to parties together, or spend nights knitting and sewing and talking, or riding horses with Laurie. It gives you an amazing sense of a childhood that really doesn't exist anymore, with all the electronics that take over our lives, and it seems like an actual innocent childhood. It's extremely wonderful to read, and it's easy for everyone to compare with at least one of the four young women, or even Laurie. I highly recommend it.
