The Stranger Beside Me Book Summary

Utterly unique in its astonishing intimacy, as jarringly frightening as when it first appeared, Ann Rule's The Stranger Beside Me defies our expectation that we would surely know if a monster lived among us, worked alongside of us, appeared as one of us. With a slow chill that intensifies with each heart-pounding page, Rule describes her dawning awareness that Ted Bundy, her sensitive coworker on a crisis hotline, was one of the most prolific serial killers in America. He would confess to killing at least thirty-six young women from coast to coast, and was eventually executed for three of those cases. Drawing from their correspondence that endured until shortly before Bundy's death, and striking a seamless balance between her deeply personal perspective and her role as a crime reporter on the hunt for a savage serial killer -- the brilliant and charismatic Bundy, the man she thought she knew -- Rule changed the course of true-crime literature with this unforgettable chronicle.

The Stranger Beside Me - Ann Rule Reviews

During the time Ted Bundy was committing his horrific crimes, I was about the same age as his victims of choice. Although I've had a life-long interest in true crime, this case touched me the most. Ms. Rule's in depth descriptions of the victims and their families, which are often rarely mentioned, were sensitive and very moving. I never met Ted Bundy (thank God) but Ms. Rule's writing allowed me to consider how sad and confusing it must have been to have cared for and trusted some only to discover the awful acts of which the "other" half this person was capable. I will continue to read her books.

What is amazing perspective from someone who actually knew Ted Bundy. Rules perspective is unique and provides a personal insight into the drama surrounding this horrific case.

Talk about not being able to put it down; the first time I read this I was shopping in a mall and went into the bookstore. I stumbled upon the paperback version, picked it up and started reading while standing in the aisle. I finished the whole book in one read. There is irony here. The photos help. I'm pretty sure you will feel the same way. Ann tells the true story of her association with Ted Bundy. They worked together on a hotline. Picture this..Anne, the author, all alone with Bundy, night after night.

Very well written. I had a hard time putting it down and I couldn't get it out of my head. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the abnormal psychology of a serial killer.

The terrible nightmare that was Ted Bundy has never been so expertly accounted for as he has been in The Stranger Beside Me.
