A gentle breeze blew her blonde hair across her face, her glazed eyes staring blankly into the sunset. Her small frame looked lost hanging from the large oak tree. On the branch next to her was a worn child’s rope swing. She looked too young and beautiful to be dead.
When the body of a woman is found hanging from a tree in her front garden, rookie Detective Morgan Brookes is first on the scene. But Olivia Potter is past saving. And when her husband and daughters cannot be traced, Morgan knows there is more to this tragedy. And then she finds them. Lying huddled together in the dark basement, each of their faces covered with a small cotton cloth, their bodies cold to the touch.
But as Morgan kneels beside the family, she realises that one of the girls is still breathing. As she holds Bronte’s fragile hand in hers, begging her to hold on, she vows to find out who has done this.
Every day Morgan wakes at 4.25 a.m., her old insomnia now mixed with a new fixation on the case. But every clue about the murdered family leads to a dead end. Until, trawling through old files, she discovers a link to a cold case from years ago. Another family was found murdered, their innocent faces covered with white cloths.
When Morgan returns to the scene of the crime to discover more about this forgotten case, she finds another body. With Bronte still unconscious in hospital, Morgan must act fast to solve this case before the killer returns for the girl left alive…

Addicted!. It was great. Couldn’t put it down
Brilliant, hooked straight awsy. This was a brilliant story line that hooked me from the first page. You almost felt you were there with Morgan and wanted to know what happened next. Thought she would get the guy in the end though, maybe next time!
I had to read on. I got the second book and didn’t know about this one. So easy to read I didn’t want to put down. Love the style of writing and I would recommend can’t wait to start number two.

A promising start to a new series. Helen Phifer is back and on fire with this first instalment in a new series featuring Detective Morgan Brookes. One Left Alive is one thrilling read and what you will read inside this book will leave you completely shook! The house on the book cover may look idyllic, but the horror of what takes place inside, will chill you to the bone! The story comes to life right from the first chapter and no time is wasted getting things going. Never at any time does Helen Phifer take her foot off the accelerator, making this a super fast read. It is overflowing with tension and suspense, while littered with red herrings and twists and turns along the way to keep you on your toes. While I thought the ending was a little bit rushed, there were no loose ends and everything is tied up nicely. What I think that Helen Phifer does best in her books, is the development of her characters. Each are meticulously created, believable and you are able to resonate with them. Morgan as the lead, is a force to be reckoned with and I throughly enjoyed her character. She carries the role of a lead on her shoulders well and I look forward to getting to know her more in future books. As an established author who knows her way around the crime thriller genre, Helen Phifer does such a great job at getting her readers attention straight away, as well as keeping it which she expertly does here. Her writing is smooth and engaging and each chapter leaves you wanting more. She really is an asset to the writing community and the crime thriller genre. One Left Alive really is one ripper of a read and is such a great start to a new series. It is definitely one that I look forward to seeing grow and I am thrilled that we only need to wait until December for the second instalment. It was a pleasure to be able to read and review One Left Alive which I highly recommend. One Left Alive.. Loved the book- engaging from the get go. Was a little disappointed in the ending as it was a bit quick and simple, but all in all a great read!!
