A Tale of Two Cities Book Reviews
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens Book Summary
One of the most famous works of fiction ever written, A Tale of Two Cities presents a portrait of Paris and London in the years before and after the French Revolution. It follows a pair of protagonists, the French aristocrat Charles Darnay and the British barrister Sydney Carton, as their lives are dramatically altered by the wrath of the revolutionaries. A Tale of Two Cities addresses the fundamentally dual nature of humanity, and a reflects on what it means to do the right thing, regardless of how the world perceives it.

Not the right Book!. I downloaded this and it is a copy of the Red Badge of Courage and not A Tale of Two Cities. Why are there so many good reviews on it???
test. test
Nice watch, run it!. Hands in the air now. Hands in the air!
My favorite book. I had to read this book in high school for extra credit to make up for skipping so much class. Started reading around 8p one night and stayed up all night to finish. It's not a fast, fluid read. It just kind of creeps up on you without your realizing. It's slow and paced but so rich in detail (without being laborious) and thick in plot that it's impossible to put down. Ten years later I've probably read it at least 5 times over and I never start reading it unless I know I can afford to finish it as well. It's just one of those great books. Because of this book, I've read all of Dickens' works. This is still by far my favorite.
Not the right book. :(
Ummm.... I don't know why this is so highly rated considering it isn't actually A Tale of Two Cities.
Tale of two cities. It's a dickens classic, Dickens is so classic, Dickens did his thing so classically.
relevant today.. "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.."
Tale of two cities.. Great read.
Good book. Good book
Great! But too wordy. I like the story! Great plot and themes. I'm just not a fan of the author's writing style...
BORING!. The language doesn’t translate well to the 21st century, for starters. Second, I made it 200 pages into the story, and the plot is basically “girl loses father, girl finds father, and the other characters are incredibly dull and useless to the storyline.” Idk how this is a “classic” or masterpiece. More like good outhouse wallpaper.
Cut-off. My version had entire sentences cut off at the beginning of every page!
Great. Read it in my English class. Great plot and great detailed book that will make you think until the very end.
Great book!!!!!!!!!. I love this book. At the first couple of pages, I was bored out of my mind. At the end there is a twist in the story so keep on reading. I recommend for anyone who loves adventure, love, betrayal and more.
What a surprise.... Had to read this in my senior year of high school...i was definitely not looking forward to this book at all...Started reading this but was bored out of my mind halfway into the book, then it started getting very interesting. About halfway in, with every turn of the page, i couldn't put it down...Love the contrast and development of the characters and you really get to either hate or appreciate them depending on the character... By the time I finished it, I remember putting it down and just going...wow. The last 100 pages are just amazing and you can literally interpret this book in so many ways due to a multitude of underlying topics and subtle messages...Some people take the title and the book way too serious...Dickens allows your mind to expand and ponder on the material at hand. He allows you to form your own opinion about whats transpiring as the story progresses...Simply put this is a masterpiece. Dickens is a genius and this novel showcases his brilliance in literature. It may seem extremely boring at first, but with a little bit of interest I guarantee you'll be struggling not to keep reading!
I like it.. A Tale of Two Cities was a very good book. I couldn't stop reading it. Although I would've preferred Sydney Carton alive at the end of the book, I'm happy that Charles Darnay and Lucie Manette had their happy ending.
Boring!!!!. I have only read the first chapter and the book is freakin boring
So glad I read this !. I began reading this book over 30 years ago when I was in college. Back then, I stopped reading after the first couple of chapters because I thought it was too boring. But now, I decided to read the whole book if it killed me. Man, am I glad I did !!! It does in fact start out rather slowly, but don't give up ... Charles Dickens is just building a foundation for the story & developing the characters. By the end of the book, you feel as if you personally know these people. And you have a vested interest in their well-being. This book is a MUST read. A side benefit is that you will understand the forces behind, and the reason for, the French Revolution. There are implications for today. If the poor in society are oppressed beyond all hope, and are mistreated by the "haves", there could be dire circumstances for all of society.
Not my fav Dickens. Didn't like it in high school, at least I understand it now. But I think Great Expectations is much better. Although of course one of the best endings to any novel, ever.
Excellent Read. While this novel has a slow star, it hits its stride about halfway through. The last third of the book is full of twists and turns, adventure, betrayal, love, and sacrifice. Excusing the cheesy ending and the slow beginning, Dicken's novel us truly a masterpiece.
Intense. Intense book but in an amazing way, always more , you have to keep reading until its over, totally worth it
Just started reading. Loving it!. I just started reading I’m on page 14 right now. I am super loving it so far :) Great book. I’m only 10 years old and I like it ( I’m going to 6th grade in a few months) I hope I keep loving this book because I need something to read when I’m bored if I’m not watching Netflix or playing video games. When I finish the book I’ll be making another review. But still, for now I’m recommending this book for those people who love to read and enjoy doing it.
G. F you ofr
It was the best and worst of times. I have been doing a bit of classic reading as of late-as I hated reading in high school- and I have found more and more enjoyment in the deep articulations of classic literature. Although at first, I was rather apprehensive at the prospects of finishing this beautiful novel due to its sometimes rambling dialog, I am quite satisfied that I read it to completion to find all the seemingly irrelevant pieces of conversation and sometimes random points of attention all converged into a most emotional and gratifying concussion. There is a reason it is the second most popular work of fiction in history and may deserve to be first.
Beautiful. The first several chapters leave you in a lulled state, as nothing exciting really happens. By the 3rd part of the book, you are completely and utterly captivated by the imagery, emotions, and just overall perfection. The last few chapters move incredibly fast and the ending is iconic. I've never read anything that was so complete, every character is tied together, from seemingly background players to the most followed characters. It left me speachless except for "Wow." The end product is a masterpiece and to be honest, beautiful.
A Tale Of Two Cities. The book is great!
Terrible. Extremely hard to understand. Worst book I have ever read in my life! Save yourself-DO NOT READ
Amazing. I had to read this book for my English class and was not too happy about it. As I made my way through the book I could relate to some of the characters and it even seemed like I knew them. This book tells of a depressing time but is a wonderful novel for anyone.
Yay. I can't wait to read this book in honor of Tessa and Will from the infernal devices by cassandra Clare!
This book defines "classic". Dickens' dry wit, gift of observation, and ability to portray the best and the worst of people make this one of the most brilliant books I have read. Thoroughly enjoyable and very satisfying.
Weird. I kept thinking this book was about London and Paris, but apparently it's about the Civil War...who knew?
Unforgettable. The stories of a doctor and his daughter, a son of an aristocrat, a banker, a lawyer, a wine-vendor and his wife, among other unforgettable characters, intertwine on the backdrop of the French Revolution. An excellent portrayal of social injustice. This novel, with its memorable characters and page-turning plot twists, has made a dramatic impact on my perception of life, wealth, death, etc.
Tweeds. Dope
Love story of the century and those before this one. If you’re saying this is boring then you haven’t read it all or have a distaste for books in general, it’s a masterpiece 🤌
The Tale of Two Cities. Truly touching. A classic. Makes me want to appreciate the loved ones around me in the present. Great read.
Dickens was a hack. Sorry, but I have to protest the obscure and twisted passages that prevail in this so-called Classic. Having read other offerings contemporary to Dickens, I found them more descriptive and understandable. Like M. Hugo, Dickens seems to delight in run-on sentences and highly unlikely dialogue. After reading the Cliff Notes version, which is in honest English, more nuances came to light then were intelligible in Dickens' telling. I am astonished that this book was recommended to me when I was merely 12. It was hard enough to understand 50+ years later.
A definite must read!. No wonder this novel is a classic. Wonderful character development with a clever plot and a timeless ending.
Tell of two cities. Classic
A Tale of Two Cities. Not as good as some other Dickens novels. The book is missing some of the infectious humor of Great Expectations (it's there, just not as prevalent). It is somewhat hard to follow at first but if you keep reading you are rewarded with a captivating climax. Read it, you'll be glad you did.
Best book I've ever read. Absolutely amazing.
Worst book. Worst book I've ever read. Don't read it!!! Its boring! I had to Read it for English, it was just very boring ,till the last couple chapters. Then it's okay I guess
A Tale of Two Cities. This heartbreaking yet heartwarming tale by Charles Dickens gives rise to the historical event, The French Revolution. Never is there a dull moment in this well written novel. The emotion elicited from the reader comes quickly and accurately in response to each character respectively. This is my favorite novel by far and I have read many of the classics. Let the spirit of this book inspire you to new hopes and heights for your own journey in this life. May God bless each soul with His revelation. This book will definitely do that. -Joni B. Kutz
What book is this?. It is not A Tale of Two Cities.
Megan White. A suspense full story that urges the reader to read on into their wildest dreams. Amazing author, incredible description words, a real cliff hanger. It makes you cry, shout, jump up and down. A really GOOD choose.
Haven't read it yet. What???
A classic historical fiction. A little tricky with the old language but a beautiful story. A few “coincidences” were a little irritating to the plot and I feel needed a little more explanation. I loved the gothic and mysterious style and settings. It gave me a much more insight into French Revolution.
J Cole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. J Cole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
👏🏻. what a story!
A tale of two cities. As depressing as the first time I read it

Astonishing. A gripping read. I was astonished by the power of this book. How have I lived so long and not read it before? Thank god I have at last.
A Tale of two cities. Very heavy going. Difficult to read old English if like me you are not used to reading. I got lost in various places and was unsure of the characters and their relationship wit each other. However a very moving story and couldn't stop thinking about the innocent victims who had their heads chopped off for no reason other than being noble. I knew there was something about the French I didn't like, I'm glad I'm English and that we have a royal family.
A Tale of Two Cities. A wonderful read! Having seen the film a few times, I already knew the story. However, the book is much more detailed and contains nuances which are not apparent in the film. It is certainly well worth reading.
Amazing. Absolutely couldn’t put it down towards the mid-end. It’s been a long time since I’ve cried out Loud so much to what’s happening in the pages and this book had me constantly doing so, it is totally fab.
At long last!. Oh my! How have I gone all these years and only just now have I read A Tale of Two Cities. Worth every acclaim that has ever been written. A legend of story telling. Just wonderful.
Taken for granted. I think Dickens is taken for granted as an author. We've all seen Oliver! and believe his works are musical screenplays. A Tale of Two Cities is a gripping tale of courage in the face of adversity as readable as Chris Ryan or Andy McNab. Many of Dickens' literary techniques have been copied over the years but that doesn't make his books any less readable. If you are expecting Jane Austin or Emily Bronte think again.

A superb story!. What a book this is and so well worth the read of it. In this book, A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens has written an engrossing and thrilling story which is full of tension, pathos and intrigue. It is an intricate tale of a family and friends and enemies too who initially didn’t know each other but their ties and relationships become apparent throughout the story. The story is set mostly in France, and Paris in particular, before and then during the horrific days of the French Revolution. Although at times, some of Dickens’ written English is a bit hard to understand, please don’t be put off - read the book, I implore you. You won’t regret it.
Great. I love reading classics and this among my favorite top 3
