Truth or Beard by Penny Reid Book Summary

Falling for the wrong twin never felt so good . . .
From the NEW YORK TIMES, WALL STREET JOURNAL, & USA TODAY bestselling series

Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!

Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why perpetually level-headed Jessica James has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can’t stand him, and she’s pretty sure he can’t stand the sight of her…

But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. Jessica James has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane’s disdain; therefore she’s unprepared for the reality that is Duane’s insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks.

When Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, how much of her level-head heart is she willing to risk?

Truth or Beard is book #1 in the Winston Brothers series. Each book is a standalone, full length (110k words), contemporary romantic comedy novel, and follows the romantic exploits and adventures of one of the six Winston Brothers.

Truth or Beard (Penny Reid) Book Reviews

Review: Winston Brothers #1: Truth or BeardTruth or Beard by Penny Reid is the first book in her new Winston Brothers series. It is a spin-off of sorts from her Knitting In The City series. It is also an amazing read. I approach Penny's books with a certain amount of reverence. First, I need my brain firing on all cylinders because the books are funny, but it's an intelligent, witty kind of funny and I don't want to miss one moments of that. Second, they are so well written. The amount of detail to describe a place, a person, or a situation is always spot-on. Never overdone but you can always see it in your mind as you are reading. Back to the actual review of the book... Duane Winston and Jessica James have been at odds for most of their lives. While she was hero-worshipping his kindly twin brother Beau, Duane was busy cutting her pigtails off or some other horrible thing. While Beau was rescuing her cat from a tree, Duane was throwing rocks at it. While Beau was being perfect and hero-like, Duane and Jessica were fighting. She always gave as good as she got though. Now Jessica is back in town, teaching calculus (and other maths) at the high school and sticking around only long enough to pay off her student loans before she plans to pick up and travel the world. A run-in with the twins at the community center on halloween leaves Jessica breathless, confused as to which twin is which and leaves Duane wondering what he just started because after that encounter he's not letting Jessica go. He just has to convince her of this fact. So that's the barest of bones of this story which is richly filled with angst and drama and complicated (but not overly-so) plot twists. Well-paced and absolutely amazing, if you aren't absolutely hooked by the first chapter you should check your pulse and make sure it still works. Another Penny book I'd rate at 6 stars if I could..Score: 5/5

There's more to Duane than meets the eye!Waiting is one of the cruelest and hardest things to do. I've been anticipating this book since last October. I've counted down the days and thankfully my wait was fruitful; Truth or Beard was totally worth the wait. Penny Reid has this way of writing that gets to me every time. She manages to mesh humor, emotion, drama, and serious issues together in a way you'll love. Boy did I laugh. Jess and Duane both narrate and it's often as hilarious as it is hot to listen to their thoughts. There were even times when I laughing and turned on at the same time. That's disturbing since most people don't equate arousal with laughter, but it's done well. There were also moments when I couldn't control my tears. I wasn't all out sobbing, but there are poignant moments that took me by surprise. I feel like I devoured this book. The pages flew by I had no idea where I was in the story. All that mattered was I read it. I loved Jess and Duane. I loved how Jess pushed the envelope on what was "okay" with her over protective father and brother. I loved how she followed her heart and didn't let anyone disparage her dreams. She didn't let any one's opinion color what she wanted or how she felt, especially when it came to Duane. I loved how she fiercely she felt for him and his family, even if she initially fought her reaction to him. I loved how Jess was with Claire, her best friend. I admired the heck out of Claire too. I have a feeling she'll be getting her own story sooner than later and I can't wait to read it! Most of all I loved how brilliant and motivated Jess was. I admired the way she was bold and determined to get Duane fully invested in their relationship. What can I say about Duane? He may be one of the trouble making Winstons, but there's so much more to him. He's honorable, dedicated, and a planner. There was so much about him I didn't know and loved learning. I was taken aback at how much he felt for Jess. He was really a case of still waters run deep. I loved how Duane was willing to go all out for those he loved. That man was so not what I thought he was going to be. He might not be a charmer like some of his brothers, but his straight forward manner really made him who he was. He definitely knew how to woo. There's no denying the attraction between Jess and Duane. You could feel the heat radiating from them when they were together. I absolutely loved how Jess couldn't deny it even when she was upset bout finding out it was for the "wrong" twin. The back and forth between the two was delicious. It was easy to see why each had fallen for the other. I was slightly surprised at Duane's reticence to go in whole hog with Jess. Duane might have ignited everything that happened between them, but for most of their relationship, it felt like Jess was the driving force behind them moving forwards. If it's not already clear, I adore the Winstons. I loved seeing them with each other. The bonds that bind them together are strong yet resilient. This book was as close to perfect as it could be. The only thing I would've liked is for there to be closure for Jess about a secret that was revealed to her. My heart broke for her and I understood her confusion and pain. I have my guesses as to who the other responsible party is, but I would've loved confirmation. As it is, I'm already looking forward to the next Winston brother book. I can't wait to come back to Green Valley, Tennessee and sit a spell. There's never a dull moment in that town..Score: 5/5

Jessica was so sassy and fun to read. And I need a Duane in my life. He was so straightforward and honest about his intentions. Left no room for games and misunderstandings. It was so refreshing. I love listening to audio books while in the car so I wish I had longer distances to drive so I can do it more often. I really loved the story even though it took me forever to listen to. Funny and entertainingThis was a cute book! I think my favorite character was Cletus even though he is a side character in the story. The story is engaging, funny, thought provoking but purely entertaining. This is a central theme for Penny Reid. She writes funny but thoughtful books. You often have to look things up because it is so smartly written that it throws you off and you end up actually learning something useful that you wouldn't have expected. The characters are well balanced, easy to empathize with and get attached to as much as you can get attached to a fictional character. The audio is also equally great! This book and Ashley's book are my 2 favorites so far. I pretty much love all of her characters, you can't help but like them. Everyone makes you laugh! Duane and Jessica make such a great couple. Duane just kills me with his epic love for Jessica. “Jessica,” he whispered, “arguing with you is one of my favorite things to do.” “You’re already on that pedestal, Princess. And I respect the hell out of you, whether you like it or not.” *girly sigh* Duane is such a good guy. His momma raised all those boys right! I really liked Jessica, so glad she got over her "mystical Beau voodoo spell". Her "brain soundtrack", so awesome! I want to start doing that. Gah! I could go on and on about this book. Getting to know the beardTruth is always the hardest to say and hardest to hear. Duane and Jessica don't start out on the right foot. Since childhood, the characters are at odds with one another. Yet, through all their pranks there is a very huge case of unrequited love on one side and other a huge case of annoyance. "I was always running after her, but this time I wasn't going to let her get away." Penny Reid really touched me with Duane and Jessica's love story. The reader is once again immersed into the Winston Family, all the brothers make an appearance to dole out their helpfulness as only they can. Ms. Reid again takes a storyline, childhood unrequited love, and turns it on it's very funny ear. Both main characters are lovable and relatable. I cheered them equally on to their HEA. The journey to HEA was pitfalls of being truthful. Duane and Jessica both are equal believers in honesty. This leads to difficult conversation and unexpected reactions. But never over the top or seemingly over reactionary in the execution to move the story along. I found as the reader rooting for each side to persuade the other to really listen, a perfect balance of fumbles by both parties. Although this book could stand alone as Ms Reid does give ample background to the main and peripheral characters, I do hardly recommend the first book in the series, Beauty and the Mustache, to be read first. If you aren't familiar with Penny Reid's writing, she weaves a funny, alway believable HEA story. Perfect blend of a smile on your face romance you may need for your day..Score: 5/5

Truth or beardI mean, this book gets marked down pretty heavily for the non consensual scene at the start with the whole twin brother mix up thing (also the name of the book). I’m sure you’ll either sit on the “it’s not a bit deal” or the “this is a plot point I can’t get past” side of things. If I remove that scene from the book then I didn’t mind it, but the best, not the worst. I liked their family dynamics and the different personalities that I’m sure you’ll get to see more of in other books.
